Bush Poppy, also known as Tree Poppy, is a striking California native shrub with showy yellow, cup-shaped flowers and leathery, blue-green leaves. It usually grows in a rounded form, reaching about 6 feet tall (sometimes more in ideal conditions), often with arching branches. The flowers are abundant from spring through summer, and its evergreen (or semi-evergreen) leaves give structure and color even in drier seasons.

  • •The bright yellow blossoms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

•Because it’s drought-tolerant, it thrives where many other shrubs struggle—along dry slopes, rocky washes, chaparral and coastal scrub.

•The dense foliage offers shelter, and its root system helps with erosion control in slope and hillside plantings.

  • •Light: Needs full sun to flower best.

•Soil: Very well-drained soil, tolerates rocky or sandy substrates; does OK in clay as long as soil doesn’t stay wet.

•Water: Low water once established; drought-tolerant. Minimal supplemental watering after roots are set.

•Size & Habit: Typically 3-10 ft tall and 2-8 ft wide, depending on conditions. Rounded or arching form. Evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on climate.
