Common Yampah is a slender perennial herb in the carrot family that grows from a tuberous root. It produces an erect stem about 2–4 feet tall, with finely divided, grass-like leaves near the base and simpler leaves higher up. In summer, it bears clusters of small white flowers in compound umbels. After flowering, it dies back and the root becomes dormant. It has a sweet, nutty flavor—especially in the root—and was a staple wild food for many indigenous cultures.
