American hazelnut is one of my personal favorite sources of protein and oil in the NorthEastern U.S. The plant starts as a multi-branched large shrub during its first handful of decades, slowly growing into a shorter, thick understory tree if grown to old growth age. The leaves and small flowers add character to the landscape through Spring and Summer followed by a showy display of brown-red leaves through fall and the beginning of winter.
