A course, sturdy, fast growing annual grass that can be grown and regrown to 5-6 feet tall 2 to 4 times throughout the growing season. The biomass produced between cutting can be used as a fresh source of mulch or composting materials. This plant loosens compacted soil, provides denses shade, and is known to suppress harmful nematode populations. A great choice for reviving worn-out soil, particularly if followed by a legume species.
Not an effective livestock feed, as it contains chemicals that can be toxic in large doses. The plant will produce excessive amounts of these toxins when put under environmental stress, but they break down easily when being used as compost or biomass.
Sorghum-Sudangrass (Sorghum x drummondii)
•Can act as a source of biomass if chopped down and returned to soil at fully mature height.
•If cut down to 6-8 inches tall, the grass can be cut down 2-4 times throughout the season.
•Root systems can act as in-ground biomass and biological structure for mycelium (mushrooms) and microbiological activity.
•Light: Thrives in full sun and can withstand weather well beyond 100°F as well as droughts and dry soils.
•Water: drought tolerate once established, benefits from heavy moisture early in growth but does not need it.
•Temperature: Requires frost-free conditions and warm soil. Cannot handle frosts.
•Care Tips: Harvest or mow down before flowering for easiest incorporation into soil as biomass.
