Sweetbush is a desert shrub native to the southwestern U.S. Its branches are thin, often leafy only near the tips, and are strongly scented. It bears clusters of bright yellow to orange-yellow, button-like flowers, especially in spring and early summer. In well-watered areas or after monsoon rains, it can flower almost year-round.
Sweetbush (Bebbia Juncea)
•The flowers of Sweetbush attract many bees, butterflies, and other pollinators in desert ecosystems.
•Being aromatic and adapted to dry, rocky, sandy soils and washes, Sweetbush is well suited to stabilizing soil in its native environment, helping reduce erosion on slopes and desert washes.
•It provides habitat or food (through its flowers) in harsh desert conditions where fewer plants bloom.
•Light: Full sun is best. Sweetbush thrives in bright, harsh sunlight typical of desert settings.
•Soil: Needs well-drained, rocky or sandy soils. It grows in washes, slopes, and scrublands. Doesn’t like soils that stay too wet.
•Water: Low water needs. Once established, it’s quite drought tolerant. It does bloom more when rainfall or monsoon moisture is available.
•Height & Spread: Usually about 3-4 feet tall; can spread via branching. In ideal conditions it can be taller.
