A native, fast-growing shrub or small tree from the Evergreen family, Yaupon is one of the only plants found in the United States; and can grow as far north as Connecticut. The glossy, dark-green leaves not only add welcome color to the landscape through the winter in tandem with its bright red berries, but the leaves also edible and caffeinated! If the leaves and twigs are dried and brewed into a tea, they have a similar taste to green tea and have about 30% the caffeine of coffee. The plant can grow anywhere from 5-25 feet tall depending on how it’s pruned.
